He has a BSc honors degree in inorganic chemistry (1991) from James Cook University and a PhD degree in supramolecular/organic chemistry (1998) from the Centre for Molecular Architecture at Central Queensland University. He has publications in peer-reviewed international journals including Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of the Chemical Society Dalton Transactions, Chemical Communications, Tetrahedron, Synletters, and Inorganic Chemistry. He has taught as an English language instructor in Japan and has worked as a copy editor for Springer-Verlag Tokyo in both freelance and in-house capacities.
